Calvin's Story

*Be sure to turn your volume up, this is a story you want to hear!*

Calvin, who is 5 years old, was born with Spina Bifida. Having recently attended the Little Light House, he became acquainted with The Center after he and his family attended “Family Ability Day,” a partnership between The Center and the City of Tulsa Parks & Recreation Department a few years ago. Earlier in 2019 Calvin and his family hosted 100 of their closest family and friends at The Center for Calvin’s birthday where they enjoyed an experience of adaptive activities and sports. Most recently, Calvin attended several weeks of our first summer camp, with the goal to increase his independence. Although he was among our youngest campers, Calvin’s confidence and independence grew significantly over the weeks he attended. He began camp with the support of a caregiver who attended with him, but through his increasing confidence and independence, he moved to attend camp by himself. The first day he attended on his own, he said goodbye to his mom then rolled into the gym without ever looking back. He had never been left alone before with anyone other than family members. His mother, Cami, was totally surprised at his independence, noting “This has never happened before!” He became very insistent that he could get himself out of the pool successfully with no assistance. Calvin’s parents noted that his new confidence and increased independence continued at home. He was getting up in the mornings by himself and getting himself ready for camp. This was something he had never done before without assistance. He continued to attend subsequent sessions of camp, always excited to try new adventures and learn to do things without assistance. Nathan and Cami shared that The Center was a life-changing experience for their family.
